Recent Frequent Electricity Cut by ENEO Explained

For some months now, the public authorities have been working to make up for the delay caused by the lack of investment in the electric power sector for several years.

What Cameroonians should know is that the power cuts in recent times are due to, among other things, the fall of wooden poles, the low hydrology of the dam of Lagdo in the Far North and acts of vandalism perpetrated on the facilities of ENEO and Sonatrel. To solve the problem of dilapidated equipment, ENEO, under the leadership of the Minister of Water and Energy, Gaston Eloundou Essomba, has launched a vast program to replace wooden poles with concrete ones.

It must be said that these wooden poles are defective, which often leads to their fall in case of heavy rains. In the Yaoundé area and its surroundings alone, there are more than 5,000 poles to be replaced. According to our sources at the Ministry of Water and Energy, work is underway in some cities. This can sometimes lead to power cuts. One more step in the search for solutions to avoid blackouts that have become part of everyday life. Especially since the government’s objective is to put an end in the coming years to power cuts in cities in particular and throughout the territory in general.

This will inevitably require the replacement of defective poles. For the record, the poles used by Cameroon until now were collected in the English-speaking area, but with the war raging, it is impossible to get supplies, hence the switch to the manufacture of concrete poles. Thus, l.4 million poles are to be replaced throughout the territory. For this year 2021, the government expects 50 thousand, with priority to large cities.
